I fell in love with the idea of working for Crispin Porter + Bogusky about a year ago when one of their employees came to speak at Florida International University. For all those who aren’t familiar with CP and B, they just happen to be one of the biggest advertising agencies right now. They are responsible for creating The King from the Burger King ads, the VW GTI ads, the innovative TRUTH ads, and those are just to name a few.
About two weeks ago, I got word that Alex Bogusky (you know, the “B” in CP and B) was going to speak at the Museum of Art in Ft. Lauderdale. Knowing that I loved their company and the work they have done, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet the man himself.

I arrived at the event, excited to see an open bar and a room full of casually dressed advertising professionals, but I still couldn’t wait for the actual presentation to begin. Now, I was expecting an older man, around 60 or so, to come out and tell us the ins and outs about the biz. Instead, appeared an incredibly handsome 44 year old man wearing blue jeans, a polo shirt, and sporting long hair styled like a young surfer.
Bogusky came out cool as a cucumber ready to answer all of the interviewer’s questions for our listening pleasure. He gave simple insight on what it takes to be in advertising. According to Bogusky, “everyone is creative”, the creativity is taught out of us as we get older. His advice, “be the ninja”; be fearless, go out expecting death. Even people like Bogusky have failures, like the Orval Redenbacher ads that were later dubbed “Deadenbacher.”
Bogusky also spoke about his company’s greatest accomplishments and biggest clients. In a nut shell, the CP+B strategy is to keep up with the times. Instead of just creating catchy commercials and characters like The King and the Subservient Chicken, they believe in capitalizing on interactive media. Myspace, You Tube, blogs, interactive sites, that’s the way to go. Get the consumer as involved as possible and they will buy.
Needless to say, Bogusky gave me hope for the future in advertising. The business will move on as long as it keeps up and incorporates technology; while being brave and clever of course. That’s the way to go for all us up and coming advertisers. Alex Bogusky is proof that a quirky guy with some creativity can become one of the most successful people in advertising. My hero!
