Gone are the days of the busy bedspreads and stale carpet commonly associated with the budget motel. In an effort to revamp their image, Motel 6 is moving from cheap to chic.

Budget competitors Red Roof Inns and Super 8 are expected to follow suit.

The upgrade, which will be the chains’ first major makeover in a dozen years, will outfit rooms with wood-like flooring, granite countertops, and 32-inch flat screen TV’s. Guests will also be able to plug in their laptops and MP3 players.

One thing that won’t change is the price, which averages about $45 a night.

sleek, modern look. While the luxury brand hotels aren’t going anywhere, more and more hotels are tending to the needs of the younger, economy-minded traveler.

Other recent trends in hotels include the addition of single-sex floors for the solo-traveling woman, and hi-tech everything (from full in-room gaming systems to keyless, iris-scan technology).

Only time will tell if these changes increase the hotel’s following…but who would turn down a comfortable bed, free wi-fi access, and a flat screen TV for under $100 a night?
