Save Darfur Campaign Starts Genocide Tour

Campaigners have begun an Olympic-Style Torch relay that will travel through countries that have suffered Genocide. The meaning behind this symbolic relay is to draw attention to the many human rights violations that occur in these countries, and to press China to influence its ally, Sudan, to end the abuses in the Darfur region.

The torch has begun its journey in Oure Cassoni Refugee Camp, Chad almost a year before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China begin. “China hopes the Olympics will showcase its growing industrial and economic might, and campaigners trying to exert pressure on Beijing over alleged human rights abuses by it or its allies have seized on the Games as a publicity opportunity,” (Yahoo News).

Actress Mia Farrow, a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, was the first to light the torch. Hopefully, this negative publicity will cause China to rethink some of their domestic and foreign policies.
